could cause extreme discomfort and even death. Thus far, the Department of Defense has been alert and correct in their efforts to keep our troops healthy. However, recent requirements to
take the anthrax vaccine has caused an uproar. On the surface, this does not make much sense. Why would military personnel object to becoming inoculated against a disease that could
kill them? Popular media have reported serious side-effects along with rumors about side-effects. It is difficult to separate accurate reports from misconceptions and misleading statements. The Department of Defense had
suspended the requirement of taking the vaccine but in October 2006, it reinstates the vaccine as being mandatory for "military personnel, emergency-essential DoD civilians and contractors" (Department of Defense, 2006).
Only those going to certain geographic areas must take the vaccine (Department of Defense, 2006). Assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, Dr. William Winkenwerder Jr., said that "the threat
environment and the unpredictable nature of terrorism make it necessary to include biological warfare defense as part of our force protection measures" (Department of Defense, 2006). He went on to
remind everyone that the FDA and independent medical researchers have consistently concluded the vaccine is safe (Department of Defense, 2006). One of the reports we hear or see is the
charge that the anthrax vaccine was not properly approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The FDA did approve this vaccine. In writing about vaccines, in general, the Centers
