uniforms, they are not appropriate at this level. Discussion The debate over school uniforms is a heated one. Those in favor of school uniforms believe that they will accomplish several things. First, they believe that wearing uniforms creates a stricter atmosphere in which there will be fewer discipline problems ("The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms"). If there are fewer discipline problems and less violence, that will result in an atmosphere that is more conducive to learning and to academic success ("The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms"). The experts also feel that uniforms will help students achieve some degree of social success as well, since there will be no ridicule of students who dont dress in the latest fashions ("The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms"). Finally, the experts argue that it costs less to provide uniforms, since children wont have to have a huge wardrobe of school clothes. The people who are against uniforms counter each of these points with a rebuttal. First, there is no evidence to suggest that uniforms accomplish any of the things they are supposed to; that is, there is no evidence that schools are less violent, safer or more learning-centered when students wear uniforms ("The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms"). Second, putting students in uniforms stifles their creativity and turns them into copies of each other, at a time when they are trying to develop their own separate identity ("The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms"). Third, there is no evidence that wearing uniforms is less costly than using regular clothing; in fact, some experts argue that it may actually be more expensive, because parents will have to buy uniforms, which traditionally cost more) in addition to the clothes they already purchase for their children ("The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms"). ...
