Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 13 page paper reviewing short term memory loss and current research on the topic. One of the difficulties inherent in research into short term memory loss is that the condition can be caused by so many different factors, some of which are physiological in origin while others lie more in the psychological realm. It is often the first visible sign of Alzheimer’s disease, but it also can result from an over-burdened, over-stressed life that prevents facts and items from being stored for later recall. Short term memory loss is most closely associated with age, alcohol abuse and Alzheimer’s Disease, all of which are discussed in the paper. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

Elam (2004) notes that the presence of depression, anxiety and stress are three conditions that affect attention and concentration, and can interfere with the storage phase of the
memory process. Several medical conditions also can interfere with short term memory. Examples are diabetes and menopause, which can affect short term memory through fluctuations in blood sugar
or hormone levels (Elam, 2004). More obvious physical conditions that can negatively affect the function of short term memory include "head trauma, brain injury, substance abuse and forms of
dementia such as Alzheimers" (Elam, 2004). Elam (2004) suggests treating the cause of the individuals difficulty with short term memory, such as antidepressants, antianxiety or hormone replacement drugs where
appropriate, but notes that there are no pharmaceutical treatments available specifically for short term memory loss. The connection between short term memory loss
and alcohol abuse has been known for decades, both empirically and on a personal level by those consuming alcohol in quantities great enough to interfere with short term memory function.
