American author Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) is considered one of the best and representative writers in U.S. history. Born in Illinois near Chicago, Hemingway spent
most of his youth camping, hunting and fishing with his physician father; a love of nature which was later represented in his work. Before he entered World War I, he
wrote as a reporter for the Kansas City Star (Griffin, 1999). His experiences in the war however had a profound effect on his writing and his version of the brutal
war, in which he was wounded, was depicted in his first successful novel "A Farewell to Arms" (1929). Throughout the 1920s and 1930s in Europe, Hemingway wrote "how it was"
about many things ranging from bullfighting and big game hunting to political causes such as the Spanish Civil War and World War II which included the publication of some of
his great works including "The Sun Also Rises" (1926), "To Have and Have Not" (1937), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940) and after the war "The Old Man and the
Sea" (1952) for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1952 among many others. In 1957, he won the Nobel Prize for his "powerful, style-making mastery of the art
