ongoing operations. There are many areas of consideration. The fleet manager needs to first manage the fleet itself; this will include consideration of the ships that are used how
they are used, what capacity is needed, where that capacity is needed and how demand can be supplied. There are a number of issues facing fleet management at the moment,
including the way that the capacity is used. A major problem facing fleet mangers in terms of the general management of the fleet and use of the chips is the
fact that despite an increased demand over the last few years the capacity in the industry is still greater than the demand. For example, in the global container fleet in
2008 there was an estimated increase in demand of 5% and in 2007 the increase in demand was 9%. However, there was an increase in capacity in both of these
years of 15% (Maersk, 2008). This means that fleet management is increasing capacity at a rate greater demand and there is a higher level of competition chasing the demand,
This is resulting in many unused ships and fleet managers have to decide if they are going to leave shops unused, and which
ships to put out of service, this is an increasingly important issue. During the second half of 2008 there was a pattern of vessels being taken out of service. For
