21st century. This is especially true for the more animistic religions such as the ancient Japanese belief system of Shinto. This paper will explore the interactions between Shinto and the
modern world, in both positive and negative senses. This paragraph helps the student present a summary overview of Shinto as a religion. The Shinto religion dates back to the founding
days of the earliest Japanese tribes, prior to written historical records ("Shinto", 2006). The religion emphasizes, at its core, the link between humanity and nature, drawing upon the belief that
all living creatures, including nature itself, are possessed of a spirit that should be respected, with the goal of living in unity with the spirits around one self ("Shinto", 2006).
It contains no standardized precepts upon ones behavior, and makes no moral prescriptions, but does have a strong metaphysical component that provides an explanation for the structure of the world
("Shinto", 2006). The followers of Shinto tend to believe not just in one god, but in a "huge array of kami (gods or spirits)" that are linked to a variety
of aspects of nature, from the earth and the sea, to the sky and the sun ("Shinto", 2006). The most prominent deity in Shinto religion is the sun goddess Amaterasu,
upon whom many of Shintos most important scriptures and mythology is built. While modern followers of the religion may not literally believe in thousands of gods existing around them at
