based on actual events, it is a fictional look at various men who are engaged in this battle. The novel speaks of both sides and speaks of individuals from various
backgrounds. Each chapter, in fact, is taken from the perspective of one individual or another. There are common men and men in control, as well as deserters as well. The
following paper presents a report of the novel and also examines who the hero of the story seems to be. Shiloh by Shelby Foote The first chapter
of the book is titled Lieutenant Palmer Metcalfe, and is the part of the story that talks of the command of the Confederate Army, led by the commander Johnston. The
character of Metcalfe seems a bit arrogant as he is an individual who presents himself as wealthy and powerful because of his position in society in New Orleans. In this
chapter the reader is introduced to his ideals and his thoughts concerning the Confederate army and the leadership of Johnston. Johnston is a man who feels that no matter the
situation, whatever the conditions or weaknesses, the army should continue to fight and do battle, leading ultimately to some disastrous results because of inexperienced soldiers and the power of the
other side. He had claimed "Id fight them if they were a million" (Foote 25). For the most part this section deals with Metcalfes perceptions of Johnston while also presenting
the reader with the high class arrogance of Metcalfe. The second chapter is about Captain Walter Fountain who is from Ohio and an officer. In his story the reader
sees him doing nothing more than really writing a letter to his wife, but through the letter one sees what is going on in the battlefront. The reader sees that
