are drawn into the narrative by the "free-floating" cynical voice of its adolescent protagonist, a fifteen year old who styles himself by the unlikely and slightly revolting nickname of Zits.
While the plot may seem insubstantial, as it veers off into fantasy; however, this provides Alexie with an ideal method for exploring the fundamental issue that troubles this young man,
which is anger at society in general and at his father, in particular, which results in Zits desiring revenge against both. Alexie beings the novel by establishing Zits within
the context of his personal history and within the setting of his new foster home. This necessary exposition of this boys past establishes the parameters that guide his journey toward
self-understanding. His father left when he was just a baby and his mother died when he was around six. He lives with loneliness and shame, which leave him frustrated and
angry so it is not surprising when he goes back to juvenile prison. There he meets an adolescent who called himself Justice and who liked to talk about justice, which
he interprets as vengeance. Plot complications ensue and Zits finds himself armed with a real gun and a paint gun in a bank lobby, intent on murder and mayhem.
He is shot and wakes to find himself in another body, a person in the past. Zits has access to the persons memories and knows the context that the person
currently faces. For example, he wakes initially in the body of a white FBI agent who is sent to Indian territory in 1973 to control the Indians who are protesting
their treatment. He is transported through time, from one body to another, each time facing situations that involve violence and revenge, which gives Zits a change to see things, quite
