the money rises to the top. More specifically, Shell has had its share of scandals, but the executives have not ignored the public angst. Rather, the executives of Shell have been on a mission to change things and it seems that they have succeeded, at least to an extent. In examining CSR and Shell, there is no question that the company has been in the news in respect to unpopular events, but it has also been doing a lot to alter its image and in that, one may see redemption. When examining issues such as corporate social responsibility, and sustainability, the three legged stool model is often discussed. The model relies on the premise that there are three primary concepts in the environment that are necessary for a sustainable society (Dawe & Ryan, 2003). Each leg of the stool represents one of the following: social well being, environmental concerns, and the economy (Dawe & Ryan, 2003). It does seem to be the case that when the economy runs smoothly, the society is being cognizant of the environment, and there is social justice, that is a good society. Of course, such balance is rare, if possible. In examining this model however, one may apply it to the intentions of an organization. If an organization would want to make things right, and hone CSR, the stool analogy can work. How does the stool idea apply to Shell? Shell has struggled with CSR. In recent times, Shell has announced grand plans to change things worldwide, but it has received much criticism over the years.
