from Ellis "Red" Redding, a man who, like Andy, is in Shawshank for murder. However, Andy, unlike Red, is actually innocent. Andy survives by keeping to himself. However, he becomes
friends with Red when he desires some contraband, a poster of Rita Hayworth. The story spans 20 years during which time, Andys life slowly improves for the better. At
first he is regularly beaten and gang raped, but a turning point comes when Andy overhears a guard complaining about his taxes. From that point on, the prison administration begins
to take advantage of Andys business expertise. However, it is Andys expertise that makes him valuable to Warden Norton in his money laundering schemes. Therefore, the Warden arranges for a
prisoner to be killed who might have been able to procure a new trial for Andy. The Warden has Andy thrown in solitary. When he is released, his nature is
visibly changed and he tells Red that if he ever gets out to go to a field in Maine and dig at a specific spot. Eventually, the reason behind Rita
Hayworths poster comes out. Behind this cover, Andy has been slowly chipping away at the prison wall. He escapes through the sewer, and establishes himself in Mexico with the
money that he stole from Warden Nortons ill-gotten funds. Eventually Red is paroled and joins Andy in Mexico. Themes : One of the principal themes of the story is how
prison life tends to bring humanity to its lowest common denominator. Not only is prison life dehumanizing for the prisoners, but it is also clear that the power that
