This is not to say that the Massacre created positive change right away, for in all honesty the Massacre was followed by strict Apartheid for many years. But, it was a massacre that brought the oppressive nature of the South African government to the attention of the entire world and thus began the pressures and struggles that would ultimately lead to the lifting of Apartheid. The following paper examines the history behind the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, the Massacre itself and other aspects of the outbreak. Sharpville Massacre The events that essentially led up to the massacre were many. In many investigations it can be traced back to 1902 when "the treaty which ended the Anglo-Boer War was signed at Vereeniging; it signified a new era of cooperation between English and Afrikaner living in Southern Africa" (African History, 2005). By the year 1910 two different Afrikaner states ("Orange River Colony (Oranje Vrij Staat) and Transvaal (Zuid Afrikaansche Republick)") were combined together with Cape Colony and Natal into the Union of South Africa (African History, 2005). The issues of repression and oppression for black Africans was immersed in the constitution of this new union and "the foundations of Grand Apartheid were laid" (African History, 2005). Following WWII the Herstigte National Party (HNP) came into a position of power in 1948 (African History, 2005). In essence this group was very unhappy with the previous party and they were incredibly dissatisfied with how the British and Africans were coming together, coming together in different ways, not the least of which was marriages.
