Generally, there were always three of us who went out religiously - whatever the weather -- but sometimes the group got as large as seven, bleary-eyed teenagers.
Wed head out by about 5 am, and be in time to watch the sunrise on the water. I remember it would always be so cold that Id invariably
play my, "Jeez-Im-freezing-to-death-out-here" record without fail as my lips turned a deep blue, and my fingers refused to register any feeling. I was so cold -- even in
my full BodyGlove wetsuit and booties - that Id often drop 4,000 mg of Niacin. As a result, potentially overdosing on Niacin was usually enough to give me
a severe flush, and the corresponding full-body itch that would take my mind off the icy water. The guys all laughed and said I should just "pee" in
my wetsuit (like they did); but somehow as the only girl in that motley crew I felt compelled to maintain higher standards. In those days, nothing could
have kept me out of the water - not even the term paper that was often due first period on Monday morning. I would have preferred, (and often did)
staying up all Sunday night and writing it, just so I didnt have to miss all day Sunday sun-burning my nose, while paddling around on my 58" tri-fin Becker surfboard.
However, Steven Spielberg changed all that. After Jaws, not only have I never resumed surfing, but walking along the
waters edge is the extent of my beach activity - period. In addition, decades later I still even hear the films, tension-filled score playing underwater in the swimming
