p. 15). This could explain the global box-office appeal of actor-turned-director Mel Gibsons highly controversial 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ. For the Catholic Gibson, this film
satisfied his desire to explore the last twelve hours of Jesus Christ in an honest and uncompromising way. The film is uncomfortably graphic in its portrayal of Christs scourging,
which is a distinct departure from earlier epics celebrating His life and crucifixion. Gibsons intent was not to make a gratuitously gory horror film about Jesus; rather, he did
not merely want the audience to see Christs pain and suffering, but to share the experience with Him. The only way to fully appreciate the ultimate sacrifice Christ made
by giving his life in the name of spiritual salvation, the director maintains, is to feel the extent of the anguish he felt during those last moments of mortal life.
In The Passion of the Christ, Gibson incorporates various Stations of the Cross, which are the various traumatic events Christ endures
from the Garden of Gethsemane until the Crucifixion. They are broken down into fourteen specific incidents beginning with the pronouncement of Christs death sentence and including his three falls,
the stripping away of his garments, his death on the cross, the removal of his body, and his burial. Some interpretations also include Christs resurrection as the fifteenth and
