Remote Environment Total health care spending in 1960 was $27 billion (Hoffman, Klees & Curtis, 2001). This amount represents 5.1% of GDP, or $141 per capita annually. In contrast, total health care spending in 1998 was $1.1 trillion (Hoffman, et al., 2001), which translates to 13.7% of GDP or $4,094 per capita annually. Rising Costs Businesses are under intense pressure to operate efficiently; health care costs are rising more than anyone could have imagined only a few years ago. As health care insurance premiums increase by double digits each year, increasing numbers of companies find that they need either to reduce benefits or require employees to pay a greater share of the costs of their health care insurance premiums.
