often found out in the end and thus those who are more righteous find their true happiness it would seem. His plays, those that are not comedies, involve power and control, greed and lust. They are stories that depict human nature at its worst and its best. In two of his plays, Richard III and Othello, we see villains that control the play. The following paper examines these individuals which are, respectively, Richard III and Iago. Richard III and Othello In Richard III it is Richard III who is the villain of the play. As one critic notes, he is "a dictatorial schemer who sets out to destroy his rivals. Psychologically he mixes courage and genius with hate, while metaphysically he is seen to represent the devil" (ClassicNotes [2[). In Shakespeares Othello we have Iago: "Iagos great cunning, manipulative abilities, and almost supernatural perception mean that he is a very formidable foe, and this makes Othellos fall seem even more inevitable and tragic" (ClassicNotes [1]). Both of these figures reveal themselves to the audience, but not necessarily to the other characters in the play. For example, Richard III states, "To entertain these fair well-spoken days, / I am determined to prove a villain / And hate the idle pleasures of these days. / Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous" (Shakespeare I i). In Othello Iago tells us, "And whats he then that says I play the villain??.../Ill pour this pestilence into his ear,/...So will I turn her virtue into pitch" (Shakespeare II iii).
