this man who ruled a people many centuries ago. One of the most famous works on Julius Caesar, however, comes to us from Shakespeare, a man known for often bringing
real characters into his entertaining productions. In the following paper we examine what Shakespeares sources were for this particular play, how valid his representation of Julius Caesar was, and how
the story is politically relevant today. Sources for the Play It is argued, more often than not, that Shakespeares primary source for the play was "Thomas Norths translation into
English of Plutarchs Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans. Plutarch wrote in the first century A.D. and recorded his biographies as would an historian" (The Tragedy of Julius Caesar).
In his description he notes that the Roman Republic was "ruled by at least one or more powerful men, yet rarely more than a few men. Shakespeare adopts this concept
of Rome for Julius Caesar, focusing more on the actions and influences of a few remarkable individuals rather than dealing with larger social movements" (The Tragedy of Julius Caesar). This
argument is supported by another who claims "Sources for the life of Caesar include biographies by Suetonius and Plutarch. The latter, in a translation written by Thomas North entitled Lives
of the Noble Grecians and Romans, was Shakespeares source" (William Shakespeares Julius Caesar). Though a separate author notes that "William Shakespeare based most of his play Julius Caesar on Plutarchs
