be an accurate portrayal of a historical figure. However, most people assume that Shakespeares Richard III is an accurate illustration of the man. As one author notes, in reference to many of Shakespeares works, "For centuries...the English have learned their history through Shakespeares plays. The Duke of Marlborough once said that Shakespeare was the only history he ever read" (Kosir). With that in mind the following paper examines how Shakespeares Richard III was adapted from the real Richard III. Shakespeares Richard III In terms of basic history, "In the early 1590s, William Shakespeare wrote The Tragedy of King Richard the Third" utilizing the works of figures such as Sir Thomas More, Edward Hall and Raphael Holinshed (Richard III). It has often been noted, or argued, that these particular authors, or supposed historians, "deliberately distorted their accounts of Richard so as to augment public empathy and support for the reigning Tudor monarchs" (Richard III). And, as is generally understood, Shakespeare simply took it another step further and elaborated even more in order to make Richard III a truly exciting and villainous character in many respects (Richard III). It should also be ntoed that in terms of the authors or historians he used, they also generally utilized others. For example, "Holinsheds Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (2nd edition, 1587)...is itself taken from The Union of the two noble and illustre famelies of Lancastre and Yorke, written in 1550 by Edward Hall" (Mabillard). Halls work was actually based on Sir Thomas Mores work, "The History of King Richard the Thirde" from 1513 (Mabillard).
