AS one author indicates, "There are probably many readers or viewers of Shakespeare who disregard the fools, because they think these characters do not play a significant part in the plays" (Hinckley). These are the first impressions most people think of when they are given "fool" as the description of a character. However, many also have a tendency to understand, when we stop and examine a story, that the role of a fool is far more complex and far more necessary to a plot and the primary characters than previously assumed. Shakespeare was renown for using fools, or foolish characters, in his plays. He was able to often utilize them as a lens through which we, the audience, can truly see what is taking place. Or they are the voice of the audience, making ironic comments and essentially standing as a sarcastic voice in the midst of madness. In essence, Shakespeare used fools, and foolish characters, in many ways, more often than not using a fool as one of the most important, if most subtle, characters. With that in mind the following paper first, and very briefly, examines fools in general and then examines Shakespeares fools. The paper then turns to discussing how the character of Enobarbus fits with these definitions, presenting us with the fool of "Antony and Cleopatra."
