three-dimensional female characters. This paper argues that Shakespeare, and no one else, wrote the works attributed to him. Discussion It turns out that there are many sources devoted to proving
that Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare, and most consider challenges to his authorship to be misguided at best and examples of very poor scholarship at worst. So what evidence do we have
that the Bard is the author of his works? First, there is the simple fact that he signed his name to them! (Reedy and Kathman). For example, in 1593, "the
narrative poem "Venus and Adonis" was published by Stratford native Richard Field, with a dedication to the Earl of Southampton signed "William Shakespeare" (Reedy and Kathman). The dedication employed the
"fawning language" that a commoner used when addressing a noble seeking patronage; it is not the language one nobleman would use to another (Reedy and Kathman). The next year, the
poem The Rape of Lucrece was published and again, it was dedicated to Southampton and signed by William Shakespeare (Reedy and Kathman). Second, Richard Field published other volumes comprising
poems "by several well-known theatrical poets. One of these poems (untitled in the volume, but now known as "The Phoenix and the Turtle") is signed William Shakespeare" (Reedy and Kathman).
In 1609, one Thomas Thorpe published the volume "Shake-speares Sonnets"; the attribution is quite clear (Reedy and Kathman). Reedy and Kathman supply a long list of the plays that were
