Rodgers - November 2001 -- properly! Introduction "The first literary treatment of the plot of Measure for Measure
was Claude Rouillets Philanira (1556), a Latin play which was translated into French seven years later. This was followed by the version given in Giraldis Hecatommithi, a collection of tales
in which Shakespeare also found the plot of Othello" (Anonymous Notes on measure for Measure MEASURE.htm). There was also a French translation produced by Gabriel Chappuys in 1584. "George Whetstones
play on the same theme, Promos and Cassandra, had been published in 1578, and this was Shakespeares principal source. Three years later Thomas Lupton retold the story in the second
part of Siuquila, and in 1582 Whetstone rehandled it as one of the tales in his Heptameron of Civil Discourses" (Anonymous Notes on measure for Measure MEASURE.htm). There were also
other versions of the story, although "they appear to have had no influence, direct or indirect, on Shakespeares play. Shakespeare probably wrote Measure for Measure in 1603-04" (Anonymous Notes on
measure for Measure MEASURE.htm). As we can readily note, the story of "Measure for Measure" is one that pertains to a subject that has often been examined through many
different texts. Also as noted, however, is the fact that Shakespeare seemed to utilize Whetstones version for his own rendition of the theme possessed in his story. It was, of
course, changed to create a typical Shakespeare story that attracted and intrigued audiences. In the following paper we examine how Shakespeare kept some elements the same and changed others in
