the modern era were innovative poets who created complex verse whose true meaning involves understanding the significance of symbolism and imagery. Each man uniquely represents his era through the legacy
of his work. Furthermore, the musicality of their verse also provides another areas of commonality. While their work can be compared on a number of levels, these points can be
illustrated by examining Shakespeares The Tempest and Eliots The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Shakespeares The Tempest is one of his shortest plays, but it is also
one of the most complex, as it abounds in symbolism that his Elizabethan audience recognized as relating to the role of the monarchy and the features of an ideal
ruler. The action of the play begins with a ship that is the midst of a severe storm. Alonso, the King of Naples, appears on deck, and he is
accompanied by his son, Ferdinand, the heir to his throne; Antonio, the Duke of Milan; Sebastian, the brother of Alonzo; and Gonzalo, an honest adviser and councilor to Alonso.
Fearful for their lives, Alonzo begins to give orders to the sailors, but only manages to get in the way. The Boatswain tells the King and his companions that if
