of Arden, and back again with regularity. An examination of the structure of the play reveals that this use of setting is pivotal to the action of the play
and the way that Shakespeare has comedic complications unfold. Furthermore, examining the structure of the play shows how the use of setting provides necessary motivation for action in the
play, as well as providing a semi-magical realm in which the unusual reactions and circumstance can be accepted as believable. The first use of setting is in the orchard
at the family home of Oliver and Orlando, two brothers who subsequently argue over the inheritance left to Orlando by their father for his education. Oliver, the older brother, denies
Orlando his inheritance because - being good and just - everyone prefers Orlando to himself. Oliver learns from Charles, who is a renowned wrestler and has a match planned with
Orlando, that there is trouble at Court. The rightful Duke, who is referred to as "Duke Senior" in this play, has been banished by his younger brother Frederick and fled
with his retinue into the Forest of Arden. His daughter remains behind at Court because of her great affection for her cousin Celia. However, the Duke appears to be prospering
very well in the forest. Oliver connives to have Orlando killed in the upcoming wrestling match by making it clear to Charles that Orlando is no-good, and, therefore, his death
