demonstrates all of these qualities. It is undoubtedly one of the Bards best plays, and quite possibly his best. This is largely due to the plays superb construction. First
of all, Shakespeare goes to great pains to establish the character of both Othello and his bride, Desdemona. Having shown that this is an honorable man and a exemplary woman,
deeply in love, Shakespeare than proceeds to have Iago chip away at Othellos psyche until he murders his love in a jealous rage. The tension builds throughout the play as
Iago builds his lies and the audience watches the slow destruction of Othellos nobler resolves. Each action builds unavoidably toward the storys tragic end, which makes this one of the
greatest tragedies of all time. An examination of the play reveals the intricacy of this construction and also how Othellos position in life, as a Moor and a military man
effectively placed him outside the realm of conventional society. In Act I, Scene 3, Shakespeare has Othello defend himself on charges bought
agianst him by Desdemonas father Brabantio, who cannot believe that his daughter married the Moor of her own free will. The speech that Othello makes before the Duke
of Venice is highly revealing of his character. This characterization is vital to the internal logic of the play because the tragic nature of the story hinges on
the audience being aware of the upstanding nature of each both Othello and Desdemona. In relating his life story, Othello establishes that he is noble, descended from African royalty. Furthermore,
Othellos simple recitation of his life experiences shows that he has endured and triumphed over considerable adversity. He has lived in soldiers camps and engaged in the arts of war
