example, the antagonism between Beatrice and Benedick contrasts sharply against the instant declarations of love that occur with Hero and Claudio. Beatrice and Benedick early-on in the play establish their
positions as being firmly against marriage. Benedick declares, "That a woman conceived me, I thank her; that she brought me up, I likewise give her most humble thanks; but that
I will have a recheat winded in my forehead, or hand my bugle in an invisible baldrick, all women shall pardon me...I will live a bachelor" (Act 1, Scene 1,
lines 241-249).Likewise, Beatrice avows her desire to never marry in Act II, Scene I-she will not marry "till God" makes "men of some other metal than earth. Would it not
grieve a woman to be overmastered with a piece of valiant dust?" (lines 62-64). On the other hand, Beatrice and Benedick share a characteristic with Hero and Claudio in that
they are also clearly attracted to each other. For example, the first thing that Beatrice does in Act I is inquire after Benedicks safety, which demonstrates that this is
