Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page essay that contrasts and comparisons the rulers in A Midsummer Night's Dream, As You Like it, King Lear and The Tempest. The writer argues that the Elizabethans saw monarchy and the monarch as the embodiment of the state. If a ruler took his responsibilities seriously, all would be well with the political body. On the other hand, if the ruler did not take his responsibilities seriously or was sick in his body or his mind, the society, likewise, suffered. This feature can be seen throughout Shakespeare's portfolio. No additional sources cited.

Theseus, the Duke of Athens. Theseus is a just ruler who embodies al of the virtues of a public man of action. However, his tastes are those of a man
trained to the arts of war and government, and not toward the finer sensibilities . Therefore, Theseus supports Egeus in forcing his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius against her will.
As this suggests, Theseus narrow vision as a ruler also contributes to the complications in the forest. However, while Theseus contributes to the comic complications, he is basically a good
