It has become more prominent in recent years, in fact, because of the Internet and other forms of technology that put pornography and other forms of ready contact with sexually
explicit material at our fingertips. Classifying and treating sexual addiction, however, is complicated by misunderstanding and controversy.
Sexual addiction is becoming a more and more common component of modern life. Innumerable individuals suffer from the
condition yet there is no definitive way to classify or treat it. That is the case because, although popular culture widely recognizes the condition and, indeed, some might say
even breeds it, the therapeutic community has shied away from researching it and identifying appropriate methodologies for treatment. Sexual addiction, or as
Weiss (2012) clarifies, "excessive adult consensual sexual behavior" is one of the most controversial psychiatric conditions affecting the world today. Sexual addiction was first officially recognized as a psychiatric
