would crop up in North America. Women did get the right to vote early in the century, but it would take the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to really
see change. When Mary Tyler Moore threw her hat up in the air in Minneapolis on her 1970s sit-com, it represented a substantial change for women. Women could, as the
theme song suggested, make it on their own. Prior to this time, women generally would grow up with the hope of marrying a man who had a good job. Wealth
would come from this one source. Today, women are in charge of their own destiny, but there is some concern that women are still not treated fairly. One way to
prove that it is the case that there is sexism in America is to look at the gender wage gap. One study for example claims that there is a gender
gap and that it is worse for women who have achieved high levels of education. That is, not only does the study demonstrate that a gender gap exists, but also
it claims that education does not help women. Authors note: "According to the 2005 survey, womens wages are in general notably lower than those of men. Moreover, the gender pay
gap widens as educational attainment increases: women earn 81% of mens wages at compulsory educational level, that is lower secondary school, while womens pay decreases to 74% of mens when
they both hold a degree; the gender pay gap declines even further, to 65%, at post-graduate level" ("Gender pay gap wider for better educated women," 2007). This is one example
and there is clear evidence to back up the claim. Yet, when it comes to other areas such as media, beliefs and politics, one has to rely on anecdotal evidence.
