However, through this particular approach there are also stereotypical elements, elements that speak or address issues of sexism and racism. The following paper examines sexism and racism in the film Trading Places. Sexism and Racism in Trading Places In relationship to the theme or presence of sexism there are three women who essentially offer the viewer a picture of women in general. There is, first of all, Winthorpes fianc? Penelope Witherspoon. One could say she is nothing more than a pretty face and body. She is ignorant and stupid and when Winthorpe no longer has money she runs off with other men, seeing Winthorpe as disgusting. This offers the veire an image of women that is shallow. Women only want a man who has money, they only want a man who fits their social ideal and so they are simply golddiggers in many respects as seen in this particular character. There is the prostitute, played by Jamie Lee Curtis and at first her depiction is powerfully stereotypical. She is a wise talking and brash prostitute that flaunts her body and acts like a tough hooker. She is representative of women who sell their body and are also ignorant. Of course, her character is all for show because she is actually a very intelligent and determined woman, as well as a generous and caring woman.
