They further are thought to be beyond rehabilitation as it is believed that there is no cure for desiring children for pleasure. It may be an illness, but short of castration, there is not much that can be done as the recidivism rate for sexual offenders is quite high. That said, sex offenders are found in different categories. Some simply expose their body parts and that is enough, whereas others are male and rape heterosexual women. Some simply "go too far" on dates, but even a convicted date-rapist is considered a sex offender. Women have been viewed as harmless, but there are quite a few female sex offenders as well (Denov, 2001). In fact, that was a point made with the film Disclosure when Demi Moore forced herself onto Michael Douglass. The primary point of all this information is that there is no stereotypical sex offender. Sex offenders are not all the same, and the public is most fearful of violent pedophiles for obvious reasons. No matter what type of sex offender one is, for those released from prison, there is a great deal of difficulty resuming normal life. This is true for any convict, but it is especially difficult for the sex offender because he or she is usually required to register with the police department. The registration procedure is something equated with the infamous Megans Law that requires sex offenders to register with the police once they move into a community.
