There are many people who argue that sex and violence on television should have far more restrictions and others who simply argue that viewers are responsible for what comes on their television. The following paper examines whether or not there should be more restrictions concerning sex and violence on television. Sex and Violence on Television As mentioned, there are many people who simply argue that people should be responsible for what comes on the television. Many decades ago, before cable television and hundreds of channels being available, it was far simpler to regulate what was on television, especially at any given time. Adult programming was for evening hours. Today, however, there are so many cable channels that some channels are specifically geared towards adults and as such they offer up shows that have sex and violence 24 hours a day. This gives the public options and in light of this, and the fact that many people desire these channels, it is generally assumed that it is up to the parents, or the household, to restrict television channels that may possess sex and violence. But, at the same time seemingly harmless channels or programs will often present content that may be objectionable. As an example, this particular writer/researcher has a daughter who is 11 years old. The television show Americas Next Top Model is a favorite and in old episodes, shown on the station Bravo, there will be commercials for sex oils by KY brand. In essence, some seemingly harmless shows or entertaining shows may offer up commercials that are not necessarily appropriate.
