Parents attempt to discuss this subject with their children and more often than not wait until the children are old enough to know much of what is necessary. By waiting
to discuss the subject when the child is a teenager the topic of sex becomes even more embarrassing and sensitive. This is perhaps the primary subject matter in the movie
"American Pie." It is, first and foremost, simply a shallow comedy about teenagers trying to deal with their sexual nature, but also a movie that makes fun of sex in
a way that can perhaps help offer relief for the sensitive topic. The following paper examines how this movie can be seen as a movie that helps break down barriers
on the subject of sexual relations and identity. American Pie A very interesting critical commentary comes from one individual who claims to be 37 years old and finds
it hard, in many ways, to relate to the film. But, at the same time the critic remembers what it was like, and thus illustrates how this film can be
an asset when discussing the sensitive topic. The critic notes, "Ive finally acquired some sort of Zen acceptance about the fact that Im thirty-seven and movies marketed for seventeen-year-olds may
just not appeal to me....Yes, the movie does have that somewhat annoying trait of finding gut-wrenching humor in the very existence of sex and other bodily functions; its full of
