sells. Advertisers have used it for decades to promote everything from cars to make up; promoters use it to sell CDs; studios use it to hype films; and half
the fun of the Christmas season is seeing how risqu? the perfume and mens cologne ads get. But the commercialization of sex has a much darker side: prostitution.
In the 19th Century, the U.S. "was dominated by the beliefs in a double standard--men needed to have sex outside of the home and prostitution served a useful social role
by providing that sex" (Bullough & Thomas 1993, p. 581). In the decade 1855-1865, prostitution was "second only to tailor shops in terms of retail trade and manufactured articles"
in New York (Bullough & Thomas 1993, p. 581). Women working as prostitutes made far more money than they could as domestics or factory workers, and "thriving prostitution meant
thriving real estate values" for landlords and speculators (Bullough & Thomas 1993, p. 581). Thus, I think its fair to say that in discussing the "commercialization of sex" we
should look at prostitution and other forms of sex-for-hire, rather than any other interpretation. Sex Tourism: a Growing Trend Sex tourism is the practice of traveling abroad in
order to have sex in a country where sexual practices are seen as "less restrictive" than those in the travelers home country. Traveling for the purpose of visiting prostitutes
