gender are something that many authors believe go far beyond biological determinants. Society impacts us in practically every aspect of our lives. As Jane Smiley reveals in "You
Can Never Have Too Many", even our toys can have a phenomenal impact on the way that we ultimately forge our sex roles. Considerably more important, however, are the
other people that we associate with. Gloria Steinem makes this point quite clear in "Marilyn Monroe: The Woman That Died Too Soon". This paper will review these
two articles for their insight on how various factors affect not only how we portray our femininity externally but how we act it out internally.
One would think that our biology, i.e. whether we have female organs or male organs would be the primary determinant in our sex roles. As Smiley reveals,
however, there are many subtle reflections of sex and these can be influenced from something as simple as a toy. Smiley looks back on her daughters formative years and
reflects on how they shaped up as young women. She observes that her daughters ideas of a sex role are much different than hers. Smiley is evidently a
down-to-earth woman, a woman for whom neither makeup or fancy clothes and shoes hold much allure. Her daughters, however, are just the opposite. Somewhat jokingly and somewhat seriously,
Smiley accredits that difference to the influence of "Barbie", that shapely female doll that has been a part of so many womens childhood lives.
Smiley has a point in her contention that Barbie is an influential factor in a young girls view of herself and how she relates to the world. Many
