Sex-Change in the Workplace There appears to be both good news and bad news in the workplace with regard to this issue. In 1995, a man became a woman named Tammy Redstone and asked Hackensack Medical Center to pay for the operation, which cost $20,000; she also wanted reimbursement for "psychological treatment and gynecological care" all of which the hospital has refused to pay (Zambito, 1995, p. C01). Her attorney argues that since she is now a woman, she is entitled to gynecological treatment, which the hospital pays for its other female employees but continues to deny Redstone. The lawsuit accuses the hospital of discrimination for denying Redstone payments for gynecological examinations, Pap smears, and estrogen therapy, costs that Guston [Redstones attorney] says the hospital pays for other women employees insured by the hospital. (Zambito, 1995, p. C01). Guston says Redstone opted for the surgery because she "was diagnosed with gender dysphoria" that made the operation medically necessary (Zambito, 1995, p. C01). Gustons research has shown "that courts have forced insurance carriers to pay if the procedure is deemed medically necessary and not for cosmetic purposes" (Zambito, 1995, p. C01). In New York City, "while many companies lack specific protections for transgender workers, an increasing number are confronting the issue" (Marshall, 2005, p. 1).
