The reciprocal relationship between behavior and attitudes is such that a person who harbors strong feelings against sex before marriage based within the context of faith, those feelings are typically deep-seated enough to maintain that persons vow of abstinence before marriage. When the religious commitment is not as powerful, however, the authors find the tendency for an individual to slip from his self-discipline is much more likely. The stringent nature of religion avails itself as a discouraging influence over premarital sex, inasmuch as devout individuals feel responsible for carrying out fundamental principles inherent to their respective faith. For example, as strict as Christianity may be regarding where a marriage ceremony may take place, it is even more exacting when it comes to the subject of sex and its relationship to marriage. It is no secret that Christianity disapproves of sex outside the vows of marriage; in fact, if it were not for the sole purpose of procreation, which is considered to be the only true function of sex, Christians would see no need for having sexual relations whatsoever. Christianity views sex as the single-most undermining factor of todays society, especially when engaged outside of marriage. Chastity is the watchword of Christian ethics pertaining to sexual relations. Its teachings reflect that sex is something holy and sacred, and is to be respected for the happiness it brings within the context of marriage.
