Introduction A new story has emerged practically every day over the last month about
the potentially fatal disease known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The manner in which the disease is covered, however, has varied considerably according to the media format and
location. The manner in which various governments have handled this disease has varied considerably as well according to the same factors. We dont have to look very far
to discern that distinction in coverage. Canada, in fact, is right at our doorstep. As such the SARS outbreak there has not only occupied the Canadian government and
media but also the U.S. government and media. The purpose of this paper is to compare the news coverage from a major newspaper in the U.S., one in Canada,
and the Canadian government in regard to the SARS outbreak. Literature Review
The Canadian governments views on SARS is recorded in a number of formats. One of the most readily accessible, however, is the World Wide Web.
On the Ontario Ministry of Healths site, for example, the government provides a history of SARS and its most recent status. This site notes that on March 26,
2003 SARS was proclaimed a provincial emergency in Ontario. A very brief, four lines in fact, recap is provided of the measures which were enacted to address this emergency.
