of the Seventh Day Adventist Churchs identity crisis. Seventh Day Adventist: Identity Crisis In looking at the identity crisis one author
notes that, "The fact of the matter is that this very unique Protestant church has been wrestling with a serious identity crisis for the past four decades, and this explains
the low attendance and the empty pews. Until the Adventist church determines to face up to their many problems, correctly resolving their debilitating theological debates, they will continue to
self-destruct" (Norris, 2006). Many of the problems, the causes of the identity crisis, began a few decades ago. In better understanding these causes the history of the church in the
past few decades is first presented. It is interesting to note that in the beginning of the 20th century the church notes a 50% membership increase from 1910 to
1920 (Norris, 2006). The 1930s saw the same increase and then in the 1940s the church grew quite rapidly and had many followers (Norris, 2006). In 1940 the membership was
numbered at 117,000 and this number grew to 325,000 by 1960..."600,000 by 1980, finally reaching the 1 million mark in 2004" (Norris, 2006). Norris (2006) further illustrates the following statistics
in relationship to the growth, fast and slow, of the church: "During the 1940s the denomination grew rapidly at a 37% rate, which dropped to 34% in the 1950s.
During the tumultuous 1960s the growth slowed further to 31%. But in the 1970s, the growth rate increased back up to 37%, which would turn out to be
