profit. What most people dont realize, however, is that workplace bias can vary from the obvious to the barely perceptible. In some ways the more obvious forms of biases can be more easily dealt with than those that perpetuate the lesser perceptible forms of biases. Racists and bigots can be fired or dealt with in other effective ways because they are easily identified. Those that perpetuate some of the less obvious forms of bias, however, often dont even recognize themselves as being biased. In "Making Diversity Work: Seven Steps for Defeating Bias in the Workplace", author Sondra Thiederman identifies these less obvious forms of biases as "guerilla bias". Guerilla bias, Thiederman (2003) clarifies, is even committed by people that think they are somehow helping out the group that in fact they are being biased against. There are many examples of guerilla bias. One of the more interesting is age bias. Exerting guerilla bias against someone because they are either younger or older than your "ideal" employee, coworker, or boss is different from radically discriminating against someone because of their age. Consider a situation, for example, in which a relatively young person is charged with supervising someone that is considerably older than them. The younger person might actually like older people yet they might also have a tendency to think older people cannot perform in a particular job to the same degree a younger individual might. The younger person transgresses from simply thinking differently about older people to committing guerilla bias, however, when they start differentiating in their official expectations of that individual.
