In contrast to those forms of colonialism where natural resources that could be shipped back to the mother country were the primary focus, settler colonialism focused on taking and
settling the land itself. In many cases these colonies completely replaced the indigenous peoples that once lived on those lands. Settlers established towns, transportation networks, and other infrastructural
features but they also established something considerably more important. That something, of course, was the settler society itself. In some ways settler societies differed radically from the
European societies from which they sprang. In other ways, however, they were largely the same. Australia, South Africa, and even Mexico can be viewed as settler societies.
Settler societies have, in fact, been established the world over. For an excellent example, however, we have no further to look than right here in the United States.
Here we see a classic example of a society that has claimed the land for its own and displaced the indigenous inhabitants and their own societies with a society that
in many ways was a mirror image of that the settlers had left in Great Britain. While there were, and are, many similarities, however, there are also many differences
to take into consideration. English colonization of the so-called "New World" came replete with a number of cultural and political considerations. The period encapsulating one of the
most intensive in terms of English colonization of the Americas was one of the most progressive times in England in terms of national and economic achievements and developments in the
