to the German market. The purchase of the 21-store Wertkauf hypermarket chain in 1997 and the 74 Interspar stores in 1998 stores that were in a state of general disrepair.
It took many years to create a profit, several years after the acquisition, in 2000 the company in Germany had a turnover of $3 billion and still made a $200
million loss (Business Week, 2001). In Germany there was a total culture clash with a misunderstanding of the market and the
corporate culture in Germany. To succeed in China the company need to adapt and learn and understand the way in which the culture may be different.
The first consideration is that of organisational contact and control. If we look at the issue of contact and control then the country is remote, but
is also developing technologically. However the infrastructure is very different and the culture needs to be appreciated so that control may be retained. China is a communist state; the leaders
are not capitalists although there are moves towards a more capitalist economy with the recent changes and increasing access to the markets to foreign investors. However, the country is still
run by anti-capitalist leaders, and the way in which business is conducted in the state reflects this culture (Taylor, 2000). The way
