character in and of itself. In many ways it is the protagonist, the character making all of the bad things happen and forcing characters to learn and deal with the
setting if they are to survive. This is because the setting is war, and war is a very powerful character that can destroy people or make them stronger. And, either
way, no character comes away from direct contact with war the same person they were when they first went to war. With that in mind the following paper examines the
setting in Timothy Findleys story "The Wars." Setting in "The Wars" As mentioned, the setting is war. The primary character who somehow believes that war will be a
heroic and noble endeavor, is Robert Ross. Like many young men he feels that war will be a good thing because he can be a man and prove he is
a man and fight a cause he feels is worthy. However, real war is always different and always destroys the young man, putting in his place, more often than not,
a man who has lost his childhood and lost more innocence than most people will in a lifetime. In this book we are presented with many horrific realities, realities
that destroy some, but seem to slowly help Robert develop more of a compassionate and noble stance in his own character. He is faced with, it seems, either giving in
