this story seem utterly believable. This story is enveloped in fantasy, and makes the reader aware that they have entered a world very unlike their own. In this
way, Shakespeare is able to present fantastic ideas befitting their fantasy surroundings, thus lending credence to them. Therefore, the duality of the settings in this story (one "real" and
the other fantasy) serves to authenticate the plot that relies heavily on fantasy. More specifically, in this story, Shakespeare portrays
acts I and V in the "real" world of Athens, while acts II, III, and IV are in the woods, which is entirely the creation of the author and does
not exist in the "real" world. The "real" setting serves to inform readers about the problems that the young lovers, Hermia and Lysander, are having. Their problems indeed
have no happy conclusion, since Hermias father forbids them to marry and wants Hermia to marry someone else - someone she does not love.
So will I grow, so live, so die, my lord, Ere I will my virgin patent up Unto his lordship, whose unwished yoke My soul
consents not to give sovereignty (Shakespeare, Act 1, Sc. 1). However,
when they flee to the woods the entire environment changes. Now, it is night, and here anything is possible. Just as the title implies, nighttime brings dreams, which
is quite fitting for this story. Magic and fantasy abound in this world, which is governed by fairies.
