change. That change involved society following the Civil War when the way of the South saw many forms of adaptation. In many respects the changes are referred to as the
ways of the Old South and the New South, especially in relationship to the wealthy and powerful social class of individuals. No longer were they able to rely on the
ways of the Old South that kept them in a high social position, a social position that was perhaps very similar to royalty, or as close to royalty as the
United States experienced. In his short story A Rose for Emily this is the setting. While the story itself, the plot of
the story, is more directly connected to the troubles of one woman and how she was unable to cope with her life and loss, it is also a story whose
setting, that of the Old and New South, plays a very significant role. The following paper examines the importance of setting as it relates to the theme or plot of
Faulkners A Rose for Emily. Setting in Faulkners A Rose for Emily The beginning of the story opens with the following line: "WHEN Miss Emily Grierson died, our
whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument" (Faulkner I). In this one immediately wonders why she was a monument.
In todays society one may well imagine that it simply means that she was an interesting and long lived character in town. Perhaps she was a powerful individual, or perhaps
