experience, which obviously had a very profound effect on his worldview, in crafting his famous short story "The Open Boat." Examination of this short story shows that the setting,
that is, the sea, plays a pivotal role in the narrative; so much so, in fact, that the ocean becomes virtually another character in the story. This fact is
evident from the beginning of the narrative, as Crane open the tale with the observation that none of the men "knew the color of the sky," as their focus was
so intently on the waves that surrounded them (Crane 728). This was, of course, because the rough sea threatened to capsize their small boat at any moment. At the oars
are the correspondent/ narrator of the tale (i.e., Crane) and the oiler, the injured captain lays in the bow and the cook continuously bails water out the back of the
small vessel. For all four men, the sea is their unrelenting adversary, which never allows them any respite, for "after successfully surmounting one wave you discover that there is
another behind it, just as important and just as nervously anxious to do something effective in the way of swamping boats" (Crane 728). As this indicates, Crane endows the setting
with human emotions, as the sea is described as being "nervously anxious." This conveys to the reader the way in which the men perceived their setting, which is as a
conscious and malevolent adversary. The setting, that is, nature, does not cease to be an adversary once the men have struggled within sight of land. The surf is too
rough and the current too strong to allow them to reach the shore unaided, as they all knew that it would probably capsize and crush the their small boat. Rather
