While that is the case to a large extent, it has become more common for social workers to use group approaches. In fact, the current situation regarding the profession in
general seems to be changing (Altekruse, Harris & Brandt, 2001). Professional counselors for example are now required to use their unique strengths (2001). Authors think that the time has
come to more clearly define the role of the professional counselor as well as to communicate the role to public figures (2001). In doing so, one legitimizes and elevates the
status of social workers, and other professionals, as well as the importance of counseling. All too often in society, counseling is thought to be minimally useful. By letting legislators
know of the relevance of the profession, the perception and actual role of the professional counselor could indeed change. Authors further suggest that todays professional counselor should be prepared to
embrace the remedial model for diagnosis and treatment with an emphasis on preventive strategies (Altekruse, Harris & Brandt, 2001). That is a good point. Despite the fact that the remedial
model has often been put on the back burner, some theorize that it will be useful in the coming decades. First, it helps to explore the remedial model. What is
it and why is it useful in counseling practice and social work? The history of the remedial model goes back to the sixties, a time when psychology and social work
was taking on a new significance. Suddenly, social concerns became apparent as the definition of family changed and the womens movement altered the professional and personal landscape. It was in
