freedom. It is the story of one womans struggle to somehow find peace with her past and her present, much of which is experienced through the death, or the murder,
of her child whose name is Beloved. As such, although a great deal of explication and literature discusses the aspects of slavery in the novel, it is a story about
one woman, a mother, who must come to terms with what she did. It is also a novel that urges us to re-examine what we think of when we think
of motherhood. The following paper discusses many elements in the novel that speak of motherhood. Sethe and Motherhood Morrisons story takes place during the times of slavery as well
as the times when slavery had been abolished. Sethe was a woman who had known slavery for many years, having primarily lived on one plantation, then escaping into freedom. As
the story opens the time period is 1873 and Sethe is free with her daughter Denver. As we have noted, the primary player in the story is Sethe. We
also have her daughter Denver, two sons that have previously left and have no truly powerful role in the story, her dead daughter Beloved, Baby Suggs who is the grandmother
of Denver and Sethes children, and many others.This establishes the idea that family is very important and thus we can assume that the role of a mother is very important.
Baby Suggs is mother to all, and Sethe is mother to several. We do not see her sons, but she talks of them and their journeys and we know that,
as a mother, she cares. She is also a mother who cares for her daughter Denver. However, there is a problem in how devoted or involved Sethe is in relationship
