he loved. Williams relied heavily upon set design as a way of externalizing the internal human passions and emotions of his characters. The set design of his 1947
play, A Streetcar Named Desire, reveals more about Stanley and Stella Kowalski and Stellas sister Blanche DuBois than pages of dialogue ever could. Through design, Williams is able to
dramatize what amounts to "a deconstruction of the forces controlling desire" (Hulley 113). The contrasting world of shadows and light hint at "an ideal love" that exists only in
the imagination is exposed in the harsh light to be little more than animalistic desire (Hulley 113). The set design that dominates the first five scenes of A Streetcar Named
Desire represents a kind of pseudo order, a reality that is often ugly and brutal. The first scene opens "with clear distinctions between inside and out, home and street,
marriage and prostitution, black and white" (Hulley 119). In a rather seedy portion of New Orleans French Quarter is the corner section of town where the Kowalskis live: "The
houses are mostly white frame, weathered grey, with rickety outside stairs... this building contains two flats, upstairs and down. Faded white stairs ascend to the entrances of both" (Williams
1797). There is a glimpse of the sky that "gracefully attenuates the atmosphere of decay" while Negro music is heard at "the barroom around the corner" (Williams 1797).
