the travel agent is that of a middle man, between travel companies, which can include airlines, cruise lines, hotels and package tour operators as well as other associated travel services.
To sell the holiday arrangements the travel agent needs access to the different providers and will also need knowledge of the services offered by the suppliers. With changes in the
environment, including an increasing an increasing level of knowledge pool travelers, consumer empowerment through greater information dissemination and use of the Internet by both consumers and travel agents, the characteristics
associated with travel agents and the service they offer has had to change in order to remain competitive. In the past the main access to travel arrangements, including airline tickets
as well is package holidays, when through travel agents. Travel agents had specialist knowledge required to make those arrangements on the context needed in order to book tickets. Today travelers
have a choice, they can use a travel agent, or they can choose to make many of the arrangements themselves. Research by Heung and Chu, (2000) has indicated that travelers
using package deals are more likely to prefer the use of travel agents, or a least to leave the travel arrangements to their co-travelers. The same research also indicated that
the individuals choosing packages would often be those that had the lowest level of knowledge regarding a potential destinations, all those with the least confidence concerning their own ability to
make independent travel arrangements (Heung and Chu, 2000). The use of a travel agent is also often associated with the benefit of gaining the knowledge and expertise of a
travel agent themselves, with their ability to advise the travelers regarding different choice of arrangements and helping them to decide which potential arrangements or packages will best suit their needs
