evidence to support its veracity and effectiveness (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002). One of the challenges if servant leadership is the term itself sounds like an oxymoron (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002).
Servant - Leader sounds like two opposing concepts. How can an individual be both a leader and a servant at the same time? In 1978, Greenleaf described servant leads
as "leaders put other peoples needs, aspirations and interests above their own" (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002, p. 57). As Greenleaf and others have attested, the person who first taught servant
leadership to the world was Jesus Christ (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002, p. 57). Christ told His Apostles "whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant" (NIV Mark
10:43). More recently, Jack Lowe, who was the CEO and Chairman of TDIndustires said that "when people become grounded in servant leadership, trust grows and the foundation for organizational excellence
is established" (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002, p. 57). There have been many other CEOs of Fortune 100 companies who have made similar comments. James Blanchard with Synovus Financial Corporation said
that the servant leader will bring harmony,, meaning and order (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002). Both TDIndustires and Synovus are consistently identified as among the best places to work (Sendjaya and
Sarros, 2002). ServiceMaster has been recognized as the best service company on Fortunes 500 list for more than a decade and its CEO states it the result of leading with
