of the police force, was an issue that was not talked about, much less socially accepted. It was the real man, Serpico, who thought that the dishonest policemen needed to
be exposed for the criminals they were. Nowadays we take the reality of dishonest police with a grain of salt, knowing the corruption exists but not being surprised at the
reality. Serpico, however, was the man responsible for brining a great deal of this truth out in the open and the film was a powerful testimony to the truths that
exist in the institution that we feel should uphold the law. The following paper examines the film and its relevance to the truth of corruption in the police force.
Serpico Serpico was a man, in life and in the film, who was looked down upon because of his integrity and his honesty. The police in his area did
not trust him nor like him, and they were certainly afraid of him. This is because he stood for what the people believed the police force should stand for. He
stood for honesty and for the law. He did not feel that the policemen should be allowed special permission to engage in illegal activity just to, supposedly, keep crime under
some kind of control. He did not believe that a policeman had the right to take money from others for protection just so they could make their lives easier. In
Serpicos eyes this made the policemen the same as the criminals. We, as a society today, clearly recognize that this is truth and this is real justice. We expect our
police justice system to maintain a level of honesty and integrity that puts the policemen above normal individuals. That is one of the reasons why it is a far more
